About
Aw man, I gotta write something about myself too? Alright, alright, let's see, what have we got here?
Short and simple: I really like Drum and Bass. Like many other people, I got into it through Pendulum, but the obsession only really started in 2016 when I went to my first DnB rave. After experiencing the sheer insane energy and the people's unending love for the music first-hand a few times, I wanted to find out more about the genre. I started digging through all the subgenres, going through all the recommendations threads on Reddit and DnB Talk. At some point I realised this stuff is a never-ending hole of new artists and music, but instead of doing the sane thing and stopping, I decided to explore as much as I humanly could. And I never really stopped!
Sure, there were all those other weekly release playlists and they were great and all that, but every week I found myself being annoyed that there was still a lot of insanely good stuff missing on there. So early 2020 I decided to start up my own weekly releases list, the Brand New Drum And Bass playlist on Spotify. Excitedly, I shared my list on the /r/dnb subreddit, but I soon realised another DnB super-fan, Ossi from the fine Finnish duo Telm & Wilson, was already doing the same exact thing. While that didn't stop me from updating the list every single week up to this day (assuming I'm still alive when you're reading this), we decided it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense to post the same list twice every week. Instead, we banded together: Ossi does the Beatport scouting and post management, Jan aka Voynich handles the Bandcamp side of things, I do Spotify research and, to spice the list up a bit, write a few paragraphs about my favourite releases of that week.
These paragraphs came to be known as the Picks Of The Week, which you can read in their entirety on here! Over the years, my short fanboing about whatever releases I really loved in that week, with a pun here and there for good measure, turned into in-depth analyses of all kinds of artists' backgrounds and proper deep dives into the music at hand. In 2021, we also started doing even more in-depth Album Spotlights, each with a 100% complete artist history, a proper track-by-track breakdown and all the best puns I can think of, of course. At the time of writing I have covered the likes of 1991, Wilkinson, Netsky, Boxplot, Gydra, Killbox and many, many more. All of these things are happening over on the /r/dnb subreddit, but you can find any text I wrote for there on here too, neatly packaged together.
Oh yeah, I also mix sometimes! Sometimes I show off what I consider to be the absolute best tunes of the year, sometimes I take things deep'n'dark, but most of the time I try to find doubles consisting of the nastiest Neurofunk and the cheesiest Dancefloor out there, on my Assorted Festival Bangers series. You won't find any of that on here, but I might as well show these off while I'm talking about myself, right?
One last thing: I'm not Dutch, I'm German. I know, I was surprised too!
Enjoy! 🦀❤️
